Sheffield FC went into the game as league leaders but knew Hull would be a difficult team to beat after their recent victory against previous league leaders Middlesbrough.

The match started at a quick pace, with Hull breaking very quickly and causing Sheffield problems and it was no surprise Hull took the lead after two minutes when a fierce shot beat keeper Steven Marshall at his near post.

Sheffield had two great chances through Liam Morris and Frazer Thomas to pull level but a combination of great goalkeeping and poor finishing kept the scoreline at 1-0 and this was to prove costly when Hull made it 2-0 after six minutes. Sheffield failed to track two Hull players and a quick move resulted in an easy finish to double the lead.

The game was starting to swing Sheffield’s way though, with great chances for Richard Moore and Mark England-Woodcock but again the goalkeeper made some outstanding saves to keep Hull’s lead intact.

Sheffield’s best chance fell to Liam Morris, when a great ball across the goal from James Bennett was missed with from just a matter of yards.

Hull extended their lead to 3-0 after ten minutes, again breaking quickly and leaving Sheffield to rue their missed chances at the half time break.

Sheffield decided to change formation for the second half to try and grab an early goal but again Hull started the better of the teams and quickly extended their lead after 22 minutes when Alvyn Riley missed a though ball giving the Hull attacker a one-on-one and he made no mistake.

This quick goal seemed to shake Sheffield and Hull made it 5-0 a minute later before adding their sixth after in the 28th minute, but possibly the main positive from Sheffield’s display was their never-say-die attitude and they managed to pull one back after 32 minutes.

Sheffield made a goalkeeping change with Liam Morris replacing Marshall and he brought the ball out to halfway before passing to Matthew Hammond who played in England-Woodcock to make it 6-1, but with Sheffield pushing forward Hull caught them out to make it 7-1 after 35 minutes.

With the game into the final few minutes, Hull seemed to be tire and Sheffield took advantage to score three goals within one minute.

Firstly Frazer Thomas beat the Hull keeper with a low drive, before Alvyn Riley made it 7-3 to give Sheffield hope.

When Richard Moore made it 7-4, a draw seemed a possibility but with everyone pushing forward, Hull broke quickly and finished the game off at 8-4 in the 39th minute.

This was Sheffield’s first defeat but they will take many positives from their attitude and commitment and possibly could have returned some points with better finishing.
