Norwich City Ladies have joined forces with the Norwich City men's team to create a clear pathway for talented young players between the Girls' Centre of Excellence and the Ladies team.

Emma Fletcher, who co-manages the team and plays in goal, told the Eastern Daily Press: "As a Norwich fan, for me this is a dream come true and one we have been working on for some time, behind the scenes.

"Top female clubs over the country are being recognised by their male counterparts and links to male clubs are starting to appear in all women's divisions," she added.

"Norwich City were keen to link with a female club, but up until the merger wanted to ensure they were supporting one team without folding another. Ian Thornton, who is Football in the Community Director, is the liaison between the Ladies and the club.

"He has played a huge part in helping us achieve the link and he will continue to work with us to ensure the link is successful."

Despite the link, City Ladies will not receive any financial assistance from the Canaries, although they will receive support and recognition from the club and they will also wear the club's new Aviva-sponsored kits.

Norwich City Ladies won the Eastern Region League Premier Division last season and were subsequently promoted to the South East Combination League. Fletcher wants to consolidate a place in this division before aiming for further elevation.

"We want to build a squad capable of fighting for a top-three finish the following season and even promotion," she said.

"Our link not only with Norwich City FC but also with the Norwich City Girls' Centre of Excellence programme will enhance our chances of getting the best youngsters in the county."
