This season’s FA Cup competition, the 125th in history, has given us so much to savour already. A record number of entries. The first Asian clubs to take part.

An extraordinary 40-kick penalty shootout. A goalkeeper scoring twice in normal time. A match in which a father and son officiated. Burscough. Burton. Chasetown. Eastbourne Borough. Tamworth.

I’ve been to at least one tie in every round in this special season, starting in the Extra Preliminary Round on 20th August, and my selection for the Second Round Proper was Aldershot v Scunthorpe.

I was the first person inside the ground at around 1.30 – but what can you do when you’ve got "Cup fever"?

I took up a position at the back of the covered end and watched the crowd go up bit by bit to more than 3,500.

At one point the Aldershot mascot (a dragon-like animal) kicked the Scunthorpe mascot (a dog with floppy ears) up the backside and was theatrically "sent off" by one of the stewards. Everyone was in a jolly Cup tie mood.

It was an interesting match, which the Conference underdogs might have drawn. When I got back to the station, there was a train back to London within two minutes – so it was a good day all round.

There were some pretty boggy pitches at Perivale on Sunday morning after lots of rain but there were five attractive fixtures to choose from.

"Armenian Youth" were temptingly in action on Pitch 2 but in the end I plumped for West London Phoenix v The Chiswick Dukes on Pitch 5 over the road from the tube station.

The only goal came in the final minute of the first half, when the Phoenix No.6 attempted a cross on the run just as the ball bobbled. It could have gone anywhere but actually flew into the far top corner of the goal. No-one could quite believe it.

Barnet Ladies, at home in the afternoon in The FA Women’s Cup, are a league below West Ham and lost all three matches between the sides last season. So obviously Barnet were going to win – and they did, 4-1!

During the half-time break I joined the throng in the clubhouse to watch the FA Cup Third Round draw on a big screen.

It threw up three of those magical ties between non-League and Premiership teams, so this season’s "Cup" is just getting better and better!
