Southern success

The Southern Universities were crowned Regional Champions after an exciting penalty shoot-out victory over the North.

At the regional trials in November, 180 players competed for a place in one of three squads - the North, South and Midlands.

Two months later, the three teams were battling it out at Warwick University to decide which region was the strongest. There was another incentive for the players as 30 would be invited back for the final trial for the English Universities Squad.

In the first match the South narrowly beat the Midlands 4-3 before the North inflicted another defeat on the Midlands with a 3-2 Victory.

This set up the final game as the decider, but with neither side breaking the deadlock after 90 minutes the game went to penalties, with the South emerging victorious after sudden death thanks to goalkeeper Paul Tassell’s winner.
