“Inspiring”, “informative” and “motivational” are just some of the comments received from the 174 young referees who attended the fifth Young Referees Conference.
This educational event is designed to inform, update and offer relevant information to enable a group of young referees to develop there on and off field skills.
The Regional Referee Managers, together with the likes of Mark Clattenburg, Martin Atkinson, Howard Webb and Stuart Atwell, all Level 1 referees, delivered a programme covering the skills of high performing referees, managing difficult situations and dealing with confrontation and simulation.
Our only team in the Euro Championships were present, offering an insight into their preparation for a major championship. Howard Webb spoke of developing a mental strength, keeping fit and making sure everything is in place to meet the demands of such high profile games.
Outside practical activities included positioning at set pieces as well as developing ideas on fitness regimes and exercises.
Throughout the weekend a key message developed, ‘If you want success work hard, keep focused and learn’.
