Elleray enthralls at Surrey meeting

FAMOA meeting deemed a success.

The 2009 Surrey County FA FAMOA event was held at Sutton United FC last week, with over 120 referees in attendance.  This was an increase of 25 per cent from the previous year and Vic Rolland, Chairman of SCFA Referees Committee, kicked off the evening by enthusiastically welcoming everybody.

Tim Lawrence, Surrey’s Referee Development Officer, presented the first half which included watching the new Surrey County FA promotional DVD before showing the extended refereeing scene, which was filmed at the new Level 4 Workshop at Charterhouse School in July 2009.  Tim then brought everyone up-to-date with facts and figures about the performance of Surrey County FA and how it compared with last year.

Ray Lewis, Chairman of Surrey County FA, asked David Elleray to present Ron Clarkson with his FA 50 year award. Ron, still a very active referee and Referee Society member, gave a warm speech in his customary gracious manner.

During the half time break there was plenty of activity consuming the buffet, renewing acquaintances or visiting the Referees Association stand where Brian and Angela Fish were selling kit and equipment.

Former top flight referee David Elleray was guest speaker and his chosen subject was the topical ‘Getting the Big Decision Right.’ David maintained full interaction with the audience by using UEFA film clips to test observation and powers of concentration and closely scrutinise fine detail in attempting to get the big decisions right, in the penalty area.

His superb presentation included many learning points, advice and stories as he captivated the audience with his humour and modest manner.

It was left to Chairman Lewis to close the evening and give a vote of thanks to David before presenting him with his county tie and badge, as he is now a Surrey County FA referee.
