Leadership Through Football

The new Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure is being launched in schools in September 2010 – and guess what…a brand new FA Learning football course will form part of the qualification.

The Government introduced the new Diplomas in schools last September and around 12,000 pupils have already enrolled with the Diplomas designed to provide a more applied approach to qualifications for 14-19-year-olds.

There are three levels of Diploma: Foundation, Higher and Advanced. The level is determined by the hours and work involved in the qualification and the Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure will be available at all three levels.

The Diploma is made up of three areas: 'Principal Learning' (focused on developing knowledge of the Sport and Active Leisure industry), 'Generic Learning' (in English, Maths and ICT) and 'Additional and Specialist Learning' (specialising in one topic which complements the Diploma.)      

FA Learning is working with SkillsActive (the sector skills council for Active Leisure and Learning) to create a course called 'Leadership Through Football' which will form part of the additional and specialist learning aspect of the new Diploma.

Football can be a great vehicle for teaching young people life skills such as team work, organisation, motivation and leadership. These skills will be useful in any career, not just careers within the football industry.

The higher diploma is equivalent to seven GCSEs at grades A* - C, and will prepare young people in England for higher and further education, as well as the world of work. The Diploma aims to equip pupils with a variety of skills, creating the high calibre of young people that employers need to meet business objectives within the industry.

'Leadership Through Football' will cover a variety of disciplines within football development including leading a coaching session, handling and movement and working with teams.

Football is a passionate game with the power to inspire, enthral and motivate the whole nation.  Just think what it might be able to do in the classroom...
