Frank's pride at Skills success

One million children have now taken part in The FA Tesco Skills Programme.

It was a special day for 22 budding young footballers at Wembley on Thursday, as they were able to play football with England international Frank Lampard as part of The FA Tesco Skills ‘One Million Memories’ celebration.

Lampard, who along with England Women star Kelly Smith, is an ambassador for the Skills programme, had earlier presented all of the youngsters with a special certificate to commemorate the fact that one million children have now taken part in The FA Tesco Skills Programme since its inception in June 2007.

The Chelsea star then took to a mini-pitch outdoors to take part in a few different exercises and pose for photographs with the star-struck youngsters, who had travelled to Wembley from all over the country after impressing Skills coaches with their attitude, ability and progress.

The Skills Programme, part-funded by Sport England and Tesco, has been a huge success since its introduction and there are now 90 FA Skills Coaches in place across the nation working in schools and clubs with children of all standards aged between 5-11.

With the original target being set as one million children receiving top quality skills coaching by July 2010, it was a proud moment for all involved to achieve this almost a year early.

“We highlighted the age group of 5-11 as the target for The FA Tesco Skills Programme when we started it, and we’re delighted to have reached this target,” said The FA’s Director of Football Development Sir Trevor Brooking at the celebration.

“It has got more people playing football in a good environment and with professional coaches who are able to advise and teach the game and help the youngsters improve and enjoy their football, whatever the level.”

Lampard also spoke of his joy at being involved with the Programme since its launch just over two years ago.

“I’ve really enjoyed being involved with The FA and Tesco in doing the Skills Programme,” he said.

“Some of the sessions I’ve been involved with have seen some really innovative exercises for the youngsters and it can only help improve them as footballers.

“Who knows where it might lead, but my advice is just to enjoy it and keep working hard to improve.”

That message was supplemented by Smith, who sent a video message to the youngsters from the England Women’s team base for this month’s European Championships in Finland.

“I remember I had a coach when I was younger, who used to tell me that win or lose, enjoy yourself,” she said.

“That’s how I’ve played ever since, so make sure that you enjoy playing football.”

The scheme continues to go from strength to strength and currently free holiday skills sessions are taking place in 47 venues across the country from 17-28 August.  Places are still available for 5-11 year old boys and girls, so to book a place click here.
