PSV Eindhoven's Mateja Kezman dreams of playing in England.
Kezman's coming
By Joe Bernstein. Thursday, 15 April 2004.
PSV scoring machine Mateja Kezman is used to getting things his own way.
So when he declares that it’s always been his dream to play in England, you feel it might happen sooner rather than later.
Kezman was a loser on Thursday night as Newcastle booked their UEFA Cup Semi-Final place with a 2-1 win against PSV.
If anything, the experience has only whetted the 25-year-old’s appetite to try his luck here, with Birmingham and Manchester City believed to be among the cluster of clubs chasing his signature.
"It was a great atmosphere at St James’ Park but that didn’t surprise me. I played for Partizan Belgrade against Newcastle in the Cup Winners' Cup five years ago and it was the same then.
"English football is my dream, it always has been. It is the best competition, the best football. I think I am going to play in English competition next season."
So, what will prospective buyers get for their money?
Well, Kezman has been breaking all sorts of records since he joined PSV from his native Serbia four seasons ago.
Since then, he has more than filled the boots of Ruud van Nistelrooy, and has already scored more than 100 goals in the Dutch League.
Last season’s tally of 35 was the best by any player in nearly 40 years.
That’s some achievement when you think the likes of Marco van Basten, Romario and Ronaldo have also starred in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Now Kezman seems to be after a new challenge. "I need to rest first and then see what the future brings. But certainly it is time to leave PSV and we will see next month what happens.
"There has been contact with a lot of clubs and we are very close to making a deal."
Kezman’s tireless running and quick feet make him a nightmare to mark. But even though he scored twice against Newcastle – once from the spot – Jonathan Woodgate handled him better than most.
Kezman admits Woody looked international-class over the two games.
"He is a good defender, for sure," says the Belgrade-born international. "He is one of the best in the air and good on the ground also – very quick.
"I don’t know who will be in the England team at Euro 2004 but Woodgate is good enough in my opinion. He is doing very well at the moment."
Whoever Kezman plays for next season, they are getting a winner and someone obsessed with goals.
"It wasn’t the best match for us at Newcastle. It was very frustrating. But I had two chances and scored from them, so I have to be satisfied with that."
Spoken like a true goalscorer!
