Jermain Defoe celebrates scoring for his now former club West Ham United
The window closesBy Richard Morgan. Tuesday, 03 February 2004.
With the transfer window now having closed for the remainder of the season, TheFA.com is here to provide a complete round-up of all those moves that have taken place across the country during the past nine days.
The Big Movers
JOSÉ ANTONIO REYES
To: Arsenal From: Sevilla Contract details: Four-and-a-half-year deal worth up to £17.5m Quote: "I'm the happiest man and the saddest man in the world at the same time. I'm leaving the best team in Spain to join the best team in England." (Reyes)
Having tracked this exciting playmaker since last summer, Arsène Wenger finally got his man last week, and what’s more, the 20-year-old Spain international is eligible for the Gunners’ Champions League double header with Celta Vigo later this month.
Came off the bench to make his debut in Sunday’s Premiership match with Manchester City at Highbury and will be looking to live up to his reputation as a cartoon footballer.
SCOTT PARKER
To: Chelsea From: Charlton Athletic Contract details: Four-and-a-half-year deal worth £10m Quote: "In life sometimes opportunities come along, and this was a chance I could not let slip by." (Parker)
The arrival of the 23-year-old England international at the Bridge at the end of last week not only ended the second-most talked-about transfer of the month, but it also took Roman Abramovich’s spending since he took over the club past the £120m mark.
The battling midfielder, who made a typically forthright debut for the Blues at Ewood Park on Sunday, is also eligible to take part in the West Londoners’ upcoming clash with Stuttgart in the European Cup.
JERMAIN DEFOE
To: Tottenham Hotspur From: West Ham United Contract details: £7m plus Bobby Zamora
The 21-year-old striker completed his move to Spurs just minutes before the transfer window closed for the season at 1700GMT on Monday.
The England Under-21 international, who has scored 15 league goals this season, had been attracting interest from both Manchester United and Arsenal, but will now be re-united in attack at White Hart Lane with his former Hammers team-mate Frédéric Kanouté, with 23-year-old Zamora moving in the opposite direction having failed to score for Tottenham in 16 Premiership matches this campaign.
CARL CORT
To: Wolverhampton Wanderers From: Newcastle United Contract details: Three-and-a-half-year deal worth £2m Quote: "He will prove to be a Premiership player and he might kick us in the teeth one day - I hopes he does." (Sir Bobby Robson)
The injury-plagued front man ended his four-year stay at St James’ Park, in which time he found the back of the net only eight times in 25 matches, in order to assist with Wolves’ fight to stay in the Premiership.
And, having netted on just 20 occasions in 23 league games this season, manager Dave Jones will be hoping that Cort can bring about a change of luck in front of goal for the team from Molineux.
NOLBERTO SOLANO
To: Aston Villa From: Newcastle United Contract details: Two-and-a-half-year deal worth £1.5m Quote: "He has been a pain in the backside to me as an opposition player down the years and I'm now just delighted to have him in my side." (David O’Leary)
Another player exiting the North-East, with Peru’s 29-year-old national team captain opting to sign on at Villa Park after a successful six years with Newcastle, a period in which the winger began more than 200 games for the Geordies.
However, a long-running disagreement with manager Sir Bobby Robson over the player’s international commitments created a tension that led to Solano’s eventual transfer out of St James.
COLLINS JOHN
To: Fulham From: FC Twente Contract details: Four-and-a-half-year deal worth an undisclosed amount Quote: "We will not say anything about the transfer fee but the figures in the media between five and seven million euros are absolute nonsense. The transfer fee is considerably lower." (Johan Plageman, Twente technical director).
18-year-old Liberian-born striker bought to replace the departed Louis Saha, and arrives with pace, strength and excellent close control.
Manager Chris Coleman beat off a late challenge from Manchester City to sign John, who has scored nine goals for the Eredivisie club this campaign after arriving in the Netherlands as an asylum seeker.
DANIEL VAN BUYTEN
To: Manchester City From: Marseille Contract details: On loan until the end of the season with a view to a permanent transfer Quote: "Daniel moved to Marseille from Standard Liege for £7.7m. That's a huge fee for a defender, and I believe now that the Premiership will suit him." (Kevin Keegan)
Kevin Keegan will be delighted to have picked up this highly-rated Belgium international, even if it is initially only on loan until the summer.
The 26-year-old giant centre half has been coveted by a whole host of Europe’s premier clubs recently, including Manchester United and Real Madrid, but with Marseille already out of both Europe and Le Championnat race, they were willing to let him depart. In line to make his City debut in Wednesday’s FA Cup fourth-round replay at Spurs.
IVICA MORNAR
To: Portsmouth From: Anderlecht Contract details: £400,000
This massive Croatia international striker has arrived on the South Coast to aid Pompey, who are currently suffering from a shortage of available forwards. Impressed for Anderlecht in this season’s Champions League, but was taken off at half-time on his debut in Saturday’s goalless draw with Wolves.
MARTIN TAYLOR
To: Birmingham City From: Blackburn Rovers Contract details: Three-and-a-half-year deal worth £1.25m Quote: "He is versatile and young, he's English, he is six feet, four inches tall and he can play right-back, left-back and centre-back. He is very comfortable on the ball and I think he is an outstanding talent." (Steve Bruce)
With Birmingham experiencing a defensive crisis of sorts at the moment - Stan Laziridis, Matthew Upson and Jamie Clapham are currently all out injured – Steve Bruce has decided to bring in this promising 24-year-old defender. And, he could go straight into the Blues back four for Saturday’s Premiership trip to Manchester City.
