Bolton's new boy Moreno celebrates a UEFA Cup Final goal against Liverpool
Transfer round-upBy Richard Morgan. Friday, 09 January 2004.
Every Friday, TheFA.com is here to provide a weekly round-up of all those transfers across the country in the last week, before the window closes shut once again for the remainder season on 31 January...
MOVES THAT HAVE CAUGHT THE EYE
JAVI MORENO To: Bolton Wanderers From: Atlético de Madrid Contract details: season-long loan
The one-time Spain international centre forward has moved to the Reebok from Atlético de Madrid on a season-long loan deal in the hope of resurrecting his faltering career.
The 29-year-old, who has played just eight games for the capital club in La Liga this year, will be best remembered for the leading role that he played in Deportivo Alavés' remarkable run to the final of the 2001 UEFA Cup, where they met Liverpool. However, despite going down 5-4 to Gérard Houllier's side, Moreno's display against the Merseysiders, in which he scored twice to help take the match into extra time, earned him a dream £5.5m transfer to AC Milan the following season.
Unfortunately, the move to San Siro proved disastrous and he soon found himself back in his homeland, although Sam Allardyce will be heartened by his excellent scoring record while plying his trade in the Spanish first division. And, with influential captain Jay-Jay Okocha set to be absent for a possible three weeks with Nigeria at the African Cup of Nations, as well as Mario Jardel's failure to find the back of the net in the Premiership this season, Moreno's move could not have come at a better time for the club.
Made his debut on Wednesday in Bolton's 2-1 home defeat to the champions, coming on for 26 minutes as a second-half substitute, but is in line to start Saturday's trip to Ewood Park.
MICHAEL BROWN To: Tottenham Hotspur From: Sheffield United Contract details: undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £500,000
The former Manchester City and Sheffield United playmaker arrives at White Hart Lane on the back of a sensational 2002/03 First Division season for the Blades. He scored 22 goals as Neil Warnock's side made it to two domestic cup semi-finals, as well as the play-off final, only to lose all three games. However, the 26-year-old was the standout player in Division One last season and should have few problems cementing a place in an underperforming Spurs midfield. Suspension means he will not be able to make his home debut until 17 January against Liverpool.
Caretaker boss David Pleat had to fight off competition for his signature from Glasgow Rangers and will be confident that the Hartlepool-born midfield player, who scored 28 times in 142 league matches at Bramall Lane, can adapt to life in the Premiership having already played for City in the top-flight.
VIOREL GANEA To: Wolverhampton Wanderers From: Bursaspor Contract details: short-term contract until the end of the season, with an option for a 12-month extension should he feature in a certain number of games and help Wolves avoid the drop
Dave Jones's attempts to keep Wolves in the Premiership have taken him to the Turkish first division, where he has picked up this 30-year-old Romania international striker.
Ganea has proven ability at the top level, having scored 19 times for his country in 40 internationals to date, including four in eight Euro 2004 qualifiers. Also netted on 34 occasions in 106 Bundesliga games in a four-year period for previous club Stuttgart, before he moved to Turkey last summer.
Fans in this country may well recall him scoring an 88th-minute penalty to defeat England 3-2 at Charleroi during Euro 2000, a goal that eliminated Kevin Keegan's team from the competition.
Made his Wolves debut at Kidderminster in The FA Cup third round last Saturday, coming on for the last 24 minutes, although he did not feature among the 16 in Wednesday's home draw with Blackburn Rovers.
