Premier League for Latics
By Neil Martin. Sunday, 08 May 2005.
Wigan Athletic will play in England's top division for the first time in their history - just 27 years after entering the Football League.
Wigan clinched automatic promotion to the Premiership with a 3-1 win over Reading thanks to goals from Lee McCulloch, Jason Roberts and Nathan Ellington.
And they can now looking forward to playing the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal next season.
Chairman Dave Whelan, who has spent around £75m on the club since buying it in 1995, is now preparing to provide even more funds to manager Paul Jewell over the summer to help the Latics survive at the highest level.
"It's a great, great day for Wigan and a great, great day for Wigan Athletic," Whelan said.
"Paul Jewell is the best manager I've ever worked with in my whole life. No doubt he will want some of that extra money I have promised him, but I will be happy to give it to him.
"There has been a lot of rubbish spoken by people who don't think we should be in the Premiership, but we deserve to be there and we will wear the shirt with pride next season."
Top scorer Ellington, who finished the season with 24 league goals, also paid credit to manager Jewell.
"He spoke to me at the beginning of the week and that gave me a lot of confidence. It means everything for me to score in a game like this and everybody is just delighted.
"I think all the team are now just looking forward to playing in the Premiership next season because it will be a big challenge for all of us."
Yeovil are also celebrating promotion to their highest ever level after clinching the League Two title just two years after moving up from the Conference.
The Somerset side beat Lincoln 3-0 on Saturday to finish top of the table, with Scunthorpe and Swansea definitely joining them in League One next season.
Carlisle and Stevenage will battle it out to take one of those vacant places in League Two after winning their Conference play-off matches against Aldershot and Hereford respectively.
They will face each other in a one-off showdown at Stoke's Britannia Stadium on Saturday May 14 for a lucrative place in the Football League - Stevenage for the first time in their history and Carlisle at the first time of asking following relegation last season.
