Some years ago Paul suffered the nightmare of having his medals stolen - League Championship winner, FA Cup winner, European Cup runner-up, European Cup Winners’ Cup runner-up and many more. Only the medals for representing The Football League actually had Paul’s name on. They had originally been kept in a bank vault - but so many people wanted to see them that he put them in a wall safe at home. Thieves took away the whole safe, understandably leaving Paul in great distress.

Paul told TheFA com: "I had nearly 20 years with a great club that won leagues and cups and appeared in lots of finals. Without those medals I feel I’ve got nothing to show for all that success. I’ve got six grandkids now that I’d love to show them to.

"Over the years I’ve made a point of mentioning the theft of my medals whenever I’ve been interviewed by the media. I know realistically there’s little hope of them turning up after all this time - but I was encouraged to hear that Bobby Robson got his caps back after stories about the theft appeared in the press.

"I’m often asked about the best and worst things that have happened to me, both on and off the pitch.

"On the pitch I had the misfortune to break a leg a few weeks before the 1970 World Cup and missed out on being in the squad. Off the pitch, of course, it’s been having those precious medals taken from me. I’m definitely not one of those ex-players who would sell his medals. That’s something I would never do - they mean too much to me".

If anyone has any idea about what became of Paul’s medals, he can be contacted at Leeds United. He still works there three days a week on the hospitality side with the likes of Norman Hunter and Peter Lorimer.
