Spain

Valencia took over the leadership of Spain's Primera Divisi
ón on Saturday, and with it the title of winter champions at the halfway stage of the league season, following a hard-fought 1-0 win at lowly Albacete. Meanwhile previous leaders Real Madrid, minus the injured England captain David Beckham, were surprisingly beaten 1-0 at struggling Real Sociedad on the same evening. The champions' defeat, just their third in La Liga this campaign, came after Spanish No 1 Iker Casillas dropped a second-half cross at the feet of Valeri Karpin who tapped-in the winning goal.

Valencia took advantage of the slip and moved a point clear of Carlos Queiroz's team thanks to a controversial ninth-minute penalty from Jorge Lopez. Elsewhere, third-placed Deportivo La Coruña failed themselves to capitalise on Madrid's defeat following a 1-1 home draw with mid-table Racing Santander yesterday. That leaves Javier Irureta's side six points behind Valencia at the top. The Galicians took the lead through Alberto Luque's brilliant free kick just before the interval, only for Javi Guerrero to draw the visitors level with a cute lob 13 minutes from time.

Other results in the first division saw Barcelona overcome newly-promoted Real Zaragoza 3-0 at home on Sunday thanks to strikes from Javier Saviola, a Ronaldinho penalty and Xavi Hernández. Arsenal's opponents in the knockout stages of the Champions League next month, Celta Vigo, recorded a crucial 4-2 win at ten-man Real Mallorca to ease the pressure on manager Miguel Angel Lotina.

The ex-Barça striker scored a sensational individual goal to opening the scoring for Real Betis in their vital 3-0 home win over Malaga on Sunday following a run that took him past three visiting players. His eighth-minute strike helped to lift Betis out of the drop zone a week before their meeting with Madrid.

Italy

Roma maintained their slender three-point lead at the top of Serie A yesterday thanks to a 1-0 win at struggling Perugia, although both second-placed Juventus and third-in-the-table AC Milan also recorded victories.

Fabio Capello was grateful to Brazilian midfielder Mancini, whose third-minute strike was enough to see off a Perugia side who have still to register a win in Serie A this season. Meanwhile champions Juventus overcame in-form Sampdoria 2-1 on their travels following goals either side of half-time from midfield duo Mauro Camoranesi and veteran Antonio Conte. European champions Milan saw off the challenge of mid-table Reggina to join Juve on 36 points, three fewer than Roma, although Carlo Ancelotti's men do have a game in hand on the top two.

On Saturday, financially troubled Parma brought some much-needed relief to their beleaguered supporters by beating fourth-placed Internazionale 1-0 at home. Emanuele Filippini's 41st-minute goal after a mix-up between Javier Zanetti and keeper Francesco Toldo moving the home team to within a point of their visitors in fifth. However, sixth-in-the-table Lazio lost for the second game in a row to a team struggling for survival to fall eleven points behind Roma. Brescia's winner in the capital arriving after only five minutes via Luigi Di Biagio's deflected free kick.

Player of the weekend: Kaká
The young Brazilian has made quite an impression since arriving at San Siro from Sao Paolo last summer, and on Sunday afternoon he was at it again as he rescued Milan from a 1-0 deficit at home to Reggina. Not only did the 21-year-old playmaker then score twice - his equalising goal a sensational solo effort - but he was also upended in the box to allow Andrea Pirlo to finish the match as a contest from the penalty spot.

France

Monaco moved seven points clear of the chasing pack with a resounding 3-0 home win over champions Lyons on Friday, while Paris Saint-Germain's 1-0 home win over Lille moved the capital club above Lyon into second place in the table.

Two goals from inspirational France international Ludovic Giuly, the second from the penalty spot late on, as well as a Fernando Morientes header, have all but ended the visitors' hopes of retaining their league crown this season.

Now three points ahead of them in the standings, although having played a game more, are PSG, whose winning goal on Saturday arrived via visiting defender Stathis Tavlaridis, who is currently on loan at Lille from Arsenal.

Also playing on Saturday were fourth-placed Auxerre, who overcame sixth-in-the-table Marseille 2-0 at home, and this despite the presence in the visitors goal of Fabien Barthez, currently on loan for the rest of the season at the Vélodrome from Manchester United.

Player of the weekend: Ludovic Giuly
The veteran skipper of Monaco was at it again on the South Coast against Lyons, bagging a brace either side of the break in a comprehensive 3-0 win for Didier Deschamps's side, a result that all but decides this season's title race.
