TheFA.com takes a look at the club which David Beckham will be joining - Real Madrid CF. After over a hundred yeard of glittering history, Real are amongst one of the greatest clubs in the world...
Real Madrid is one of the best known and biggest football club in the world, challenging Manchester United. Some recognition of their standing was made in December 2000 when, at an awards ceremony, FIFA named Real as the winner of the Club of the Century award.
However, Real are far from the oldest football club in the world and indeed the distinction of being the oldest club in Spain - a privilege that goes to Recreativo de Huelva. The Bernabeu is not the largest stadium, nor do Real have the largest number of season ticket holders but, throughout the world, when the name Real Madrid is mentioned, everyone knows the club - be it from the superstars of today, or whether it's because of the likes of Di Stéfano and Puskas, who played in Real's all-conquering team in the 1950s, or even the great 1980s sides that featured Butragueño, Míchel and the prolific Hugo Sánchez.
With such a rich history of outstanding players, it is hardly a surprise to see an impressive honours board - Real have won nine European Cups, two UEFA Cups and more Spanish league title than any other club. One thing that is for certain is that David Beckham is following in the footsteps of true greats of the game...
