Conquerors of Manchester United, Real Madrid, were thrashed 5-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday in one of the biggest shocks in Europe this season. And, coupled with victories for both Real Sociedad and Deportivo La Coruña, lead La Liga by just a point with six games remaining.
The European champions, who face Italian champions Juventus in the Spanish capital tonight in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, even went ahead through Ronaldo, only to concede second-half strikes to the on-loan Walter Pandiani, Albert Riera, Samuel Eto'o, a Roberto Carlos own goal and in the final minute, substitute Carlos, handing Real their first defeat at home for 49 games. Meanwhile, Real Sociedad's goalscoring hero in their 1-0 home win over UEFA Cup hopefuls Sevilla was Spain international Xabi Alonso, although on Sunday Deportivo moved above the Basques into second place on goal difference following their 5-0 home win over lowly Recreativo Huelva, with Roy Makaay netting a hat-trick, while Juan Valerón and Víctor also got their names on the score sheet.
Also playing on Sunday were fourth-placed Celta de Vigo, who overtook champions Valencia in the final Champions League spot after their goalless draw at struggling Alavés and Valencia's surprise 2-1 defeat at Racing Santander, who are now seven points clear of the drop zone. Sixth-in-the-table Athletic Bilbao thrashed Osasuna 5-1 away from home to hold on to Spain's final UEFA Cup spot, but they are only a point ahead of Barcelona following the Catalans 3-0 win at last-placed Rayo Vallecano, Luis Enrique, Marc Overmars and Javier Saviola with the second-half strikes for the visitors. And finally in La Liga, Málaga and Villarreal shared the spoils in a goalless draw, Real Valladolid moved away from danger by inflicting a 3-1 defeat on European hopefuls Atlético Madrid and fellow UEFA Cup contenders Real Betis could only manage a 1-1 draw in Sevilla with Espanyol, who as a result moved four points away from the drop zone.
