You can feel the rumbles of joy just off the Humber Estuary at the moment. People in the area, made famous for its steelworks, are starting to enjoy the football on show – especially around Scunthorpe.
The Iron have made a dream start to life in League One having only gained promotion last season and have finished the weekend joint top of the division. That is why Scunthorpe United are TheFA.com’s Team of the Weekend.
Many pundits thought that the Lincolnshire based club would only make up the numbers in the league this season. But the Glanford Park faithful have witnessed their heroes collect 14 points from their opening seven matches and now, they sit proudly on top of the table but behind Brentford on goal difference.
Scunthorpe made the short 50-mile drive to Huddersfield on Friday night where they completely outclassed their Yorkshire rivals, winning comfortably 4-1.
A brace from striker Andy Keogh helped Scunthorpe to victory at the Galpharm Stadium and leap-frog Huddersfield in the table. The Iron were always in control and went in at half-time two goals up thanks to a penalty from veteran midfielder Peter Beagrie and the first of Keogh’s strikes.
Huddersfield pulled a goal back 20 minutes after the break, but a Matt Sparrow header and Keogh’s second ensured that Scunthorpe left Yorkshire with all three points.
Manager Brian Laws was delighted with how his team has adapted to life in League One.
"It's a nice feeling to be top of the table - but I'm not getting carried away about it yet," said the former Grimsby Town boss.
"It's an exciting period for us and now we just want to keep going and see what happens but we've got used to winning and playing with each other."
Other teams considered for Team of the Weekend were Brentford for topping League One and non-league Grays Athletic who climbed to second in the Conference.
