Marcus Bignot's QPR side have risen to fourth place in The Championship.
Rangers riding high
By Marcus Bignot. Friday, 01 October 2004.
Welcome to my weekly column, and you'll be happy to know that I have just found out we are fourth in the table!
We have been doing very well over the past month, but I didn't know how far we are up the table until I finally got Sky Sports this week.
Our manager Ian Holloway has just got the Manager of the Month award, and I think it is totally deserved. After our five wins in a row we are playing with a lot more confidence and freedom.
We knew the manager would get the award, because we have been playing very well this month. It was madness in August and September when people were starting to talk about him being under pressure - after only three or four games!
Paul Furlong is on fire at the moment, and Jamie Cureton has shown what we all knew he could do. We knew we had players who could score goals in the team, and we seem to be getting them for fun at the moment.
Winning breeds confidence, and while we have been putting in some good performances, our results didn't go our way at the beginning of the season.
But now the manager has got his award, the only way is down for us! Seriously though, we are not going to get complacent, and know we have to keep it up.
There are always some surprise packages among teams that are promoted - they seem to carry on the momentum. Wigan did it last season, and Plymouth got off to a flying start earlier in this one. There is no reason why it can't be us this time.
I have had a lot of time off from managing Birmingham City Ladies due to so many players out on England duty. It can get difficult when we have so many players away because we have to adjust the coaching sessions.
We have to approach every game as a Cup tie now, because the league is so topsy turvy. We will have a lot of breaks throughout the season with all the England games on, and some of my other players training at Loughborough.
If we get that Cup mentality in every game we play we should be OK, because looking at the league doesn't tell us much at the moment.
It can be a problem with players coming and going, but it just shows how much quality we have in the side, if we have so many international call-ups.
We play Everton in our first league game since the end of August, and it will be interesting because it will be the first time the whole team has been together for quite a while.
That, and Rangers' game at Stoke on Saturday, mean I will be sampling the delights of Liverpool on a Saturday night. It certainly beats driving home then straight back up the next morning.
Be sure to come back next week, when I hope I can speak about our continuing winning form.
QPR play Stoke away on Saturday at 3pm, and Birmingham City Ladies play Everton away on Sunday at 2pm.
