The death of Brian Clough yesterday receives widespread coverage in today’s papers, with a host of top names from the game paying tribute to the legendary former manager.

Clough’s death from stomach cancer at the age of 69 makes the front page of all the tabloids.

The Sun and Daily Mirror both use a famous Cloughie quote on their front page: "I wouldn’t say I was the best manager in the business … but I was in the top one."

Rio Ferdinand returned for Manchester United in winning style last night, but his team’s 2-1 win over Liverpool was overshadowed by a potentially serious foot injury to England midfielder Steven Gerrard, report the Daily Mail.

United defender Ferdinand played a starring role at Old Trafford as his first game back after an eight-month suspension for missing a drugs test ended in victory for Sir Alex Ferguson’s team.

But Liverpool’s Gerrard limped off in the first-half and later left the ground on crutches with a suspected broken metatarsal bone in his left foot.

If the injury is confirmed, Gerrard will be out for six to eight weeks, ruling him out of England’s World Cup qualifiers against Wales and Azerbaijan.

Sol Campbell last night handed Arsenal and England a massive boost by returning to action for the first time since Euro 2004. (Sun, Mirror)

The Gunners defender had no reaction to an Achilles injury as he played for the reserves last night in a 4-0 win over Coventry.

Campbell has missed Arsenal’s opening six Premiership games but could return to the side to face Manchester City on Saturday.

And he will almost certainly return to England’s defence for the World Cup qualifier with Wales on 09 October.

City boss Kevin Keegan is reportedly close to the sack and Allardyce has been linked as his potential replacement.

But Gartside said: "I don’t think Manchester City is a big enough job for Sam - and I would not allow him to talk to them." (The Sun)

Nicolas Anelka has come out in support of under-pressure Manchester City manager Kevin Keegan.

After shooting City to a much-needed win at Crystal Palace, Anelka said the players are backing their boss.

"There has been pressure on the gaffer and pressure on us, so we wanted to get a win because we want him to stay," said the £13m striker. (Daily Star)
