Birmingham City midfielder David Dunn today starts his bi-weekly column on TheFA.com. He will share his 'players' slot' with another top-level English midfield star, to be unveiled next Wednesday...
It is fair to say that the top of the Premiership table looks slightly unusual at the moment. The teams in the first three positions are no surprise; Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United, but if you look directly below them you will see Birmingham City.
Sitting in fourth position among such company proves what a good start to the season we've made, and while we know there is a long way to go, we feel confident we can build on it. This Saturday we face our biggest test of the season so far when we travel to Manchester United for a game it has been great to hear described as 'a top of the table' clash.
A packed Old Trafford is a fantastic stage to play on and always one of the highlights of the season. I think we will go there and play our normal game; try and get stuck in, and make things difficult for them. Teams that go to Old Trafford and sit back are almost always broken down in the end, so it is probably worth trying to take the game to them.
For me, Sir Alex Ferguson's men are still the best team in the country. I can't see that they have any weaknesses. They might have sold David Beckham and Juan Sebastian Veron in the summer, but they have just carried on from where they left off at the end of last season and look impressive again.
I wasn't really that surprised when Beckham left United in the summer. I could understand it, because there seemed to be a few similarities to the reasons why I left Blackburn. Just like me, he had been at the same club for a long time, so a new challenge probably appealed to him.
Of course, the new number seven at Old Trafford is Cristiano Ronaldo. Quite a few people hadn't heard of him when he joined United, but I wasn't one of them. I knew all about him from playing against Portugal's Under-21 side last year. Even back then I could tell he was going to be a special player; he was quick, strong, very skilful and did even more step-overs than me, although his were a lot faster!
Alongside Ronaldo, United have a midfield brimming with world-class stars like Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, and a player I really admire, Nicky Butt.
He might not get as many headlines as some of his team-mates, but I can tell you that when I was in the England squad last season his quality stood out by a mile.
He is pure class and proved it at the World Cup last summer when he was awesome against Argentina. It will be tough keeping this midfield and the rest of United quiet on their own patch, but it is a challenge Birmingham City will relish.
