New Blackburn recruit Brett Emerton
New Boys: Brett Emerton
Thursday, 14 August 2003.
With the Premiership season finally getting underway this weekend, TheFA.com is here to guide you through five continental imports who will be hoping to make an impression in the top-flight in 2003/04...
Brett Emerton
Cost: £2.2m
Position: right-sided midfielder/full-back.
Previous club: Feyenoord.
Quote: "I'm going to England to fulfil my dream." (Emerton himself)
Profile: The 24-year-old Australia international had been attracting the attention of a whole host of top Premiership teams, including Newcastle United, Liverpool and Arsenal, before joining Blackburn Rovers, and with the club having sold David Dunn, Damien Duff and Keith Gillespie during the summer, he is sure to play a key role at Ewood Park this coming season.
The 2002 Oceania Player of the Year has been one of the outstanding performers during his time in Eredivisie with Feyenoord, particularly during the club's 2002 UEFA Cup triumph and it was the players versatility that made him such a sought-after commodity - he can play as a right-back, or on the right-hand side of midfield - something that England discovered last February at Upton Park when he surged through to score Australia's third goal against Sven-Göran Eriksson's side.
