Edu was a £6 million signing for Arsenal from Corinthians in the summer of 2001. The lanky midfielder born in Sao Paulo in 1978 won the double with the Gunners in his first season at Highbury, crowning his story by coming on as a substitute for Dennis Bergkamp in The FA Cup Final.

Edu also played a role in Arsenal's run to Cardiff in this season's competition, scoring with a deflected free-kick at Old Trafford to put his side one up against Manchester United in the Fifth Round.

However, the Brazilian injured his knee in the Premiership match against United on 22 April, thereby missing the last few games of the season, including The Cup Final.
