Sheringham, who has 51 England caps to his name, joins a whole host of new faces at Fratton Park as manager Harry Redknapp tries to strengthen the squad ahead of the coming Premiership campaign.

Redknapp has already brought in former Liverpool midfielder Patrik Berger and defender Dejan Stefanovic from Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem as well as Croatian defender Boris Zivkovic, with Sheringham's arrival to give Pompey a cutting edge in attack.

"The lure of the Premiership is still there, so when Harry came calling I didn't need much persuasion to come here," Sheringham said.

"I'm looking to enjoy my football like I have at every other club. I'm hoping to stay fit and if I do who knows what we can achieve?"

"Nothing has been said about a coaching role - I'm here just to play and I am very happy with that. I'm happy to be here."

Sheringham started his career at Millwall, signing apprentice forms with the south London club way back in January 1984. He made his debut for the Lions against Brentford that same season.

In eight seasons at The Den, Sheringham scored 93 goals in 220 League appearances, a time which included Millwall winning the Second Division championship in 1987/88.

Eventually Nottingham Forest, then on a high after reaching the FA Cup Final, were tempted and manager Brian Clough splashed out £2 million for the 25-year-old's signature in July 1991.

Sheringham sparkled at the City Ground and attracted the interest of a number of other leading clubs. Having just played three League games in his second season at Forest, Tottenham Hotspur stole him away for £2.1 million.

With a supporting midfield supplying him with plenty of chances, Sheringham scored freely in his first season at White Hart Lane and was rewarded with his first England cap in a match against Poland.

In just under five full seasons at Tottenham, Sheringham scored 75 goals but failed to win any silverware.

The opportunity to rectify that came about when Alex Ferguson bought the England star in June 1997 for a surprisingly low fee of £3.5 million.

After a trophy-less first season at Old Trafford in 1997-98, Sheringham and Manchester United bounced back from losing out on all fronts to win three trophies in 1998/99 and secure a famous Treble.

After the League had been won by just a single point from Arsenal, Sheringham made substitute appearances in The FA Cup and Champions League Finals, scoring crucial goals in both.

Two more Premiership-winning seasons followed in 1999/2000 and 2000/01 before Sheringham moved back to Tottenham in the summer of 2001.

Sheringham also played for England in Euro 96 and the World Cups of 1998 and 2002.
