Wayne Bridge is congratulated for Chelsea's winner at Highbury
Blues' Highbury delight
Wednesday, 07 April 2004.
An ecstatic Chelsea dressing room celebrated reaching the Champions League semi-finals last night, as they beat London rivals Arsenal on their own turf. After 17 games without success against the Gunners, here's what the Blues had to say after finally seeing off Arsene Wenger's side.
Claudio Ranieri
It was good because we wanted to finish this 17-match run against Arsenal when we have not won.
People ask if this is a good result for me, but I cannot speak personally because I do not separate myself from Chelsea as a whole.
We know we will play Monaco in the semi-final and that will be another big battle. I must admit that I would have known more about Real Madrid, because I faced them many times while I was in charge at Valencia.
But Monaco have beaten them and that shows that they have many good players and it will not be easy for us in those games.
Wayne Bridge
When I laid the ball off to Eidur Gudjohnsen, I didn't think I would get it back, but I think he put it through the defender's legs and it was a great pass. From there I just side-footed it into the bottom corner.
But overall I think we battled really hard and matched them all the way, if not more.
Frank Lampard
We have to give a lot of credit to the fans, because they were here supporting us even though we haven't beaten Arsenal in so many games.
But I'm sure that that bad run is all worthwhile for this one result.
We knew we had the capability to beat Arsenal and we really wanted to show it in this game.
I think we got stronger and stronger as the game went on and we can only get better after this result.
Joe Cole
Sometimes you just know you are going to win and because of the confidence in the squad that was the feeling we had before this match.
The confidence has been growing all season and we are starting to look really good.
We will really enjoy this result, it is a great night for the players, the club, the fans and everybody.
Everybody was jumping around in the dressing room and hugging each other and there was a real buzz.
Some of my mates were straight onto me texting that I should give Wayne Bridge a kiss to say thank you from all the fans. But I gave that one a miss because I don't want to start any rumours!
John Terry
We played like we could beat anybody. We were devastated at half-time when they scored, but we had talked before the game that if that happened we should keep our heads up, because we only had to get a goal ourselves to put them on the back foot.
Frank Lampard scored a great goal to swing it back our way and Wayne Bridge popped up with just a few minutes left to get the winner.
I think Arsenal got more tired as the game progressed, whereas we kicked on and got more and more confident.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink
Even though they scored just before the break, there was no panic whatsoever at half-time in the dressing room.
The captain just said: "Come on, we are going to do it." And all the players just thought the same.
I think we went out for the second half in confident mood and we were better than them in the final 45 minutes.
I am so happy and I hope that I will be even happier after the Final in May.
