Arsene Wenger can't hide his disappointment as Arsenal go out
Gunners' dream ends
Wednesday, 07 April 2004.
Arsenal felt their time had come and were confident of Champions League success. But Chelsea ended their hopes, finally overcoming the Gunners to send them out of the competition. Here's what Arsene Wenger and his team thought as the dust settled at Highbury
Arsene Wenger
In the first-half it was all us, but I was aware that the next goal after half-time would be very important and I think it was Lampard's goal that decided the destiny of the match.
I think our FA Cup defeat to Manchester United last weekend played a part. When you have gone on a long unbeaten run like we had, it is always a big blow to lose because you have not had to deal with it for such a while.
We want to respond now in the Premiership because we still have that to go for. But it will be a big mental test against Liverpool on Friday.
Patrick Vieira
This is a sad moment for us. It's really disappointing for the players, fans and everybody.
I think we created chances, but when Chelsea came back and equalised they showed more experience.
When they scored just after half-time we looked really down and we found it hard to respond.
Fredrik Ljungberg
We are very disappointed. We had some good periods, but Chelsea defended very well and made it hard for us.
We know that we still have the Premiership title to play for, but we are unhappy because we wanted to win this match.
But we now have two massive league games against Liverpool and Newcastle over Easter and we have to recover quickly and concentrate on that.
