Milan lift the European Cup at Old Trafford after beating Juventus on penalties
English teams learn fate
Friday, 12 December 2003.
The draw for the knockout phase of the Champions League took place this morning.
The three English sides left in the competition all won their groups and thus avoided the likes of Real Madrid, Milan and Juventus in the draw for the Second Round.
Chelsea were the second name out of the hat and will play Bundesliga leaders VfB Stuttgart, who qualified from Manchester United's first round group.
The two sides met in the 1998 European Cup Winners Cup Final when a goal from Gianfranco Zola was enough to settle the match in favour of the Londoners.
Manchester United will play FC Porto and, like Chelsea, will play away in the first leg and at home in the second.
The two sides were drawn against each other in the quarter-finals of the competition in 1996/97 when United won 4-0 at Old Trafford and drew 0-0 away.
Finally, Arsenal drew Celta Vigo and will start the tie as favourites to qualify, despite English sides' recent poor form against teams from La Liga.
Celta were one of the more fortunate sides to go through, winning their last group game against a weakened Milan team to qualify ahead of Brugges.
Two European heavyweights were paired together when Bayern Munich - the runners-up everyone wanted to avoid - were drawn against nine-times winners Real Madrid.
