About Heerenveen
Located just south of Groningen in the Frisian province, Heerenveen was originally selected for settlement due to its copious amounts of peat and turf.
Unlike the other eleven Dutch provinces, Friesland has its own language, which gives it a separate identity to the rest of the country.
Friesland's top Eredivisie side SC Heerenveen, play at the Abe Lenstra Stadium. Named after Dutch and Heerenveen legend, Abe Lenstra, the stadium has a capacity of 26,000, which is almost large enough to accommodate the whole town's population.
However, the club attracts a wide range of support from all over the northern province.
Sport plays a big part in Heerenveen's identity with the town also famed for its love of Speed Skating. The Thialf Speed Skating Arena was one of the world's first 400m indoor ice rinks when it was built in 1967.
Heereenveen is a munincipality of a largely agricultural province, famous for its black and white frisian cattle as well as the well known black frisian horses.
The province enjoys the benefits of tourism with visitors flocking to the surrounding lakes in the south west and the islands on the Wadden Sea.
