About Groningen

Twinned with Newcastle, Groningen is in the far north of the Netherlands. Home to several museums and music venues, the town is known for its arts, music, education, business and cuisine.

The City is also home to Eredivisie side FC Groningen, who play at The Euroborg stadium. Located in the south east of the city, the site is also home to a casino, a cinema, a school, supermarket and a fitness centre.

Known as the Groene Kathedraal (the Green Cathedral) or Groene Hel (Green Hell) to visiting supporters, the stadium has a capacity of 20,000 and will stage three Group A matches and will also be the setting for the show-piece Final.

The big tourist attraction in Groningen itself is the Martinitoren (Martini Tower); a huge historic grey tower which overlooks the town, offering fantastic views of the surrounding area.

The tower, which was originally built in the 13th century, has twice been destroyed by lightning storms but, after it's restoration in the 15th century, it withstood fierce fighting during the Second World War and stands proudly overlooking the main square.

As well as having a rich vein of history, Groningen also boasts an impressive nightlife. The Grote Markt, the Vismarkt, and the Poelestraat and Peperstraat host popular night spots. Thursdays and Fridays are particularly busy when many bars are open until 7am.

Groningen is also known as the 'World Cycling City', with over 50 per cent of residents preferring to cycle rather than travel by car or public transport.
