About Arnhem

Located on the Lower Rhine and the St Jansbeek, Arnhem is the second city of the province Gelderland.

Away from the city and culture, Arnhem is best known for its football team, Vitesse, who play at the Gelredome.

The stadium, which was built in 1998, will play host to three Group B matches and a Semi-Final.

Featuring a retractable roof as well as a convertible pitch, which can be retracted when the stadium is used for concerts or other events, the Gelredome can hold up to 32,500 fans and also boasts an advanced climate control system.

An historic city, Arnhem was at the centre of intense fighting during the Second World War. In 1944, the British 1st Airborne Division was given the task of securing the bridge at Arnhem in order to stop the German army advancing into the city.

However, the British troops along with their Polish allies failed to thwart the Germans and eventually were forced to surrender.

The 'John Frost Bridge', named after the commander of the paratroopers, is the third bridge to be built on the same spot. The Dutch army destroyed the first bridge when the Germans invaded Holland in 1940, while the second was destroyed by the US Air force shortly after the 1944 battle.

Known as the 'Green City', Arnhem has been a favourite place for artists to sit and paint by the Rhine, while there are also a great number of museums to visit as well as the famous zoo.
