FA Chief Executive Brian Barwick has paid tribute to the courage and determination shown by England Under-21s after watching Stuart Pearce's side lose on penalties to Holland in the European Championship Semi-Final.
Despite missing out on a place in the final after conceding a late equaliser, and then losing an epic shoot out 13-12, Barwick believes that the players will be better for the experience in the future.
Barwick said: "Stuart Pearce, the players and all the staff involved with the U21s can be very proud of what they have done in this tournament.
"Losing on penalties is a heartbreaking way to go out but the guts, determination and never-say-die attitude they showed were there for all to see. The experience can only help the players in their careers.
"We are all extremely proud of Stuart, the players and all the backroom staff."
Barwick shares the disappointment of the players, coaches, staff and fans who were so determined to see England reach the final - but is extremely proud of what has been achieved.
"While everyone is naturally disappointed to have gone out of the tournament, there are so many positives to be taken from it," Barwick said.
"Make no mistake - this was a real tournament and fantastic experience and preparation for future competitions with the senior teams.
"Stuart and the players should all look back on the past two weeks with tremendous pride. They have been a credit to the country."
