The children will come together to perform the ‘Euro Hakka’ ahead of the Final on the Ewood Park pitch. Most synonymous with New Zealand rugby, the traditional Maori Hakka is a dance of welcome and challenge. The Hakka theme has been adapted to produce eight individual Hakkas, each a reflection of the culture of the eight competing teams in Women’s Euro 2005.

The full Euro Hakka will feature on the pitch from 1.30-2.00pm ahead of the Final, which kicks-off at 3.15pm. There will be a demonstration of eight Hakkas, plus a performance of cheerleaders. At 3.00pm there will be another performance from just two of the Hakkas representing the cultures of the two Finalists.

The children from as far and wide as St Thomas School Kendal to Trinity High School Manchester and Prescot Primary School on Merseyside have been rehearsing with growing excitement, in the knowledge that they will be part of a major European sporting event.

Judith Richards of St Thomas School Kendal said: “This is such a great opportunity for our pupils to be part of a multi cultural celebration of sport. We were more than delighted to be asked to represent Cumbria on the day.”

The project run by The FA and Sport England has been supported by the Arts Council NW, resulting in the involvement of professional dance groups such as Ludus, Dance Initiative Greater Manchester and the Merseyside Dance Initiative. The NW has a wealth of talent in dance which will undoubtedly be reflected in the flair, vitality and exuberance of the whole spectacle.

Rachel Towe of Ludus dance said: “Sport is a great medium to attract new participants and a wider audience to dance. We were thrilled to be involved with the project and look forward to the potential of developing the interest of those participating in future events.”
