The plan for the new Estádio Cidade de Coimbra involved doubling the old venue's capacity of around 15,000 by adding a new tier to the existing stands.

This second, U-shaped level was built on the hill at the north end.

Opened in September last year, this remodelled stadium overlooks the city and has covered seating on three sides forming a distinctive ‘U’ shape.

How to get there

The stadium is about 1.5km east from the city centre. Bus N7T goes from Coimbra A railway station and the 5, 7, 11 and 24 go from Praca da Republica.

Express trains stop north of the city, from where you can get a connection to the Coimbra A station.

The Estádio Cidade de Coimbra is not too far away from the city centre and is easy to reach by car or public transport.

If you are travelling by car, the stadium is easily accessible from the country's main motorway, the A1 between Lisbon and Porto. Just take the Coimbra turn-off and follow the signs to the stadium.

The road between Coimbra and Figueira da Foz, a seaside town, also ends near the stadium, and is therefore a good choice for those coming from the coast.

For those travelling by plane, Porto's Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, 123 kilometres away by motorway, is the best choice.
