Lisbon triumph
On that day in 1991, Portugal, containing a young Luís Figo and Rui Costa, successfully defended their FIFA World Youth Championship title at the old Estádio da Luz - next door to the venue for Sunday's final and in the same city where the Dutch were beaten.

Brazilian memories
Their victims in a 4-2 penalty shoot-out after a 0-0 draw in front of a 127,000 crowd? Scolari's home nation, Brazil. Meanwhile, on 30 June 2002, came a triumph for Brazil - and Scolari. On that day they took on Germany in the FIFA World Cup final in Yokohama, and prevailed 2-0.

'Golden generation' matures
It has taken a while for any members of the 'golden generation' to reach a senior international final, but thanks to Scolari, that is now reality, thanks to the victory in Lisbon on the 13th anniversary of the win against Brazil. Figo admitted after beating the Netherlands that it had been a long road to get themselves the brink of glory.

'Nothing can compare'
He said: "Nothing can compare to leading Portugal to a European final. I have followed this goal since 1991 and this moment is dedicated to my old team-mates who do not have the opportunity of being here with us."

'Magical date'
Scolari, meanwhile, took time out after the win against the Netherlands "to congratulate the members of the team that won the under-20 world championship in Lisbon." Harking back to two years ago he added: "It is a magical date for me too."

Remarkable achievement
But Scolari admitted: "It is more remarkable to reach the final of EURO 2004™ with Portugal than to win the World Cup with Brazil, because four had done that in the past, and I am the first to achieve this goal with the Portuguese team."

Brassard boast
Also looking for another winners' medal is Fernando Couto, who was part of the 1989 World Youth Championship winning team in Riyadh. Fernando Brassard, now Portugal's goalkeeping coach, was between the posts in 1991.

Moreira tribute
One of Brassard's charges, Portugal's reserve goalkeeper Moreira, was nine when Figo and co retained their world title, and remembers that day well. "It is a great coincidence and a good opportunity to pay tribute to those guys that made history in our country in 1991," he said. If they can, the date 4 July will be a new date to celebrate in Portugal - and for Scolari.
