- Greece have beaten France 1-0 to progress to the semi-finals, and in doing so have caused one of the biggest upsets in the history of the European championships. They managed to stifle the array of French attacking stars throughout the game and took the lead in the 65th minute when an unmarked Charisteas headed into the top right-hand corner. France threw everything forward but did not come closer to equalising than Henry's 87th minute header, which grazed Nikopolidis' post.

- The first half ends goalless. Greece started the brighter with Charisteas and Nikolaidis causing the French defence problems with their aerial power. And they came close to taking the lead after 15 minutes when Katsouranis and Lizarazu combined to steer a Karagounis free-kick towards Barthez, but the French goalkeeper blocked the ball on the goalline with a little help from his post. France, meanwhile, have created little so far.

- Panagiotis Fyssas returns to the left of defence with Traianos Dellas and Mihalis Kapsis continuing at the centre. Georgios Karagounis, meanwhile, returns after serving a one-match ban and takes his place in a four-man midfield alongside Theodoros Zagorakis, Angelos Basinas and Konstantinos Katsouranis.
- Greece coach Otto Rehhagel has reverted to a 4-4-2 formation after the experiment of playing with three strikers against Russia backfired. Star striker Themistoklis Nikolaidis makes his first start of the tournament up front together with Angelos Charisteas as Zisis Vryzas, who scored against Russia, is suspended.
- Holding midfield player Patrick Vieira has not overcome a leg muscle problem in time to face the Greeks, so Olivier Dacourt deputises. He will play alongside Claude Makelele in defensive midfield with Zinedine Zidane and Robert Pires starting on the wings. Up front, David Trezeguet gets the nod despite calls for Louis Saha to start in partnership with Thierry Henry.
- France coach Jacques Santini has had a defensive headache this week after right-back Willy Sagnol was ruled out with a broken arm. William Gallas, however, has recovered from a twisted ankle so Santini is able to field the four-man defence that played against England in the opening game with Mikaël Silvestre and Lilian Thuram in the centre and Bixente Lizarazu to the left.
- France won Group B ahead of England, Croatia and Switzerland to qualify for the last eight while Greece beat Portugal and drew with Spain to finish second in Group A and set up this tie. However, they lost to Russia in their final group game and Otto Rehhagel’s team will be the underdogs going into this game.
- France go into the match on a 16-game unbeaten run in competitive matches. Greece, on the other hand, are playing their first ever knockout game in a major tournament after ending a run of two competition appearances without a win.
