Rooney became the youngest ever player to score in a European Championship finals with his superb double in England's 3-0 victory over the Swiss.

But the modest Everton star, still only 18, was keen to deflect all the post-match plaudits.

"It's nice breaking records but the victory is what mattered," he said.

"Obviously scoring in as big a tournament as this is a big achievement. But it's a team game and we want to win as a team.

"Later hopefully I can look back and say I got that record but for now I'm just thinking about the results.

"I think we played well. We could have played better but we won the game and that's what we wanted. There was pressure on us after the France game but we just wanted to get three points."

Rooney was even modest in the description of his two well-taken goals that guided England to what was acomfortable victory in the end, with Steven Gerrard adding a third.

"For the first one Michael put the ball on my head and I couldn't miss really," the striker said.

"Then Darius Vassell held the ball up really well and I just hit it as hard as I could and luckily enough it went in."

The Rooney-Michael Owen partnership looks here to stay, and although Owen was substituted for the second match in a row, Rooney was quick to add his vote of thanks to the Liverpool man.

And he also believes he is feeling more and more at home in the Three Lions squad.

Rooney said: "We've been together for a few weeks and every day is getting better. I'm getting more relaxed around everyone else and all the lads have been great.

"There was a lot of disappointment after the France game and we were all eager to come here and get a win - which we have done. We didn't perform the best we can do but we've got three points which is good."
