England's number one believes the heartbreaking defeat against France has concentrated the minds of every single player in the squad - and made them realise that winning is what really matters.

A 3-0 victory over Switzerland has revitalised England's tournament hopes and if the Three Lions can manage to finish in the top two of Group B, they will play either Spain, Greece or Portugal in the last eight.

But James is refusing to try and work out who England could play in the quarter-finals - because he says it doesn't matter.

"After losing the France game we just want to get through," said James.

"That's all we can do. We have played the favourites on Sunday and OK we lost, but for 90 minutes we were the better side.

"We have no fear of playing anyone. If you want to win a tournament by playing the poorer teams all the way to the final that's not much fun. We will take on anyone.

"We're watching all the games and we know what's out there. There hasn't been much difference between the top teams and the bottom teams, so I don't think it matters who you play.

"Playing Switzerland hasn't been easy. We scored two goals when they lost a man but given even teams it was a very difficult match.

"In the end we got what we wanted and that's three points. It's all very well having good performances against the France and Brazils but we didn't win those games."

England's next task is to take on Croatia, with the group currently wide open after last night's results.

James said: "We need to beat Croatia now and that's all that matters.

"I'm an optimist and I think we'll do it but we can't look forward to the quarter-finals yet and start worrying about who we would face.

Let's just get on with things and make sure we pick up another three points."
