There has been intense media speculation, now TheFA.com can bring you the official news about the song for The England Team for EURO 2004.
The song to get behind the team out in Portugal will be a remix of "Alltogethernow" by The Farm, edited by DJ Spoony and featuring additional vocals by the St Francis Xavier Boys’ Choir, Liverpool, who recently performed at the 15th anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy.
The inspiration for the song was the unofficial armistice on the Western Front on Christmas Day 1914, when British and German soldiers emerged from the trenches to play a historic game of football in "No Man’s Land".
Singer/song-writer Peter Hooton, of The Farm, explains: "The fact that the greatest game in the world had momentarily united the soldiers was the reason I wanted to capture the spirit of that day in the lyrics. It’s a fantastic honour to have our song chosen to be the Official England anthem."
Originally released at Christmas in 1990, the song has been given a totally new feel. DJ Spoony personally delivered the song this morning to the Radio 1 Breakfast Show studio. The DJ and football show host said: "The song is a classic and I’m a massive England fan, so when The FA asked me to get involved, I couldn’t believe my luck."
Today, as the England Team look forward to EURO 2004, the song’s message is as important as ever. This summer, England have the players and the manager to go all the way, but to give England the best chance of success, they need the support of the whole country.
The song ties in with The FA’s campaign to promote positive support during EURO 2004, which is also called "Alltogethernow".
Jonathan Hill, The FA’s Group Commercial Director, told TheFA.com about The FA's reasons behind choosing the modern classic.
"First and foremost, we think it’s a great song," he said. "The fact it supports our initiative to promote positive behaviour both in England and Portugal during EURO 2004 is an added bonus."
Alltogethernow 2004 will be released on May 31st. England’s first game at EURO 2004 will be against France on June 13th, in Lisbon, Portugal.
