Eniola Aluko scored a brace as England beat old rivals Scotland 3-1 in Zalaegerszeg.
Scotland 1-3 England
UEFA European Women's U19 Championship
ZTE Stadium, Zalaegerszeg
20 July 2005
Mo Marley's England U19s got off to the perfect start against Scotland in the UEFA Women's U19 Championship.
England were firmly in control of the match after Women's Euro 2005 star Eniola Aluko scored midway through each half, only for Scotland to spark a frantic few final minutes by hitting the crossbar through Emma Fernan's fierce volley before Fay Hughes halved the deficit.
Scottish hopes were finally dashed when Arsenal's Lianne Sanderson kept her cool to seal the win with a last-gasp header meaning England have maximum points ahead of their return to Zalaegerszeg to face Russia on Friday.
England's Karen Carney, another star of the Seniors team at Women's Euro 2005, saw a long-range shot parried away by Scotland goalkeeper Caroline Collie before Pamela Liddell forced a sprawling save from Carly Telford in the England goal.
Though both sides looked like they might take the lead, it was England who did so through the fleet-footed Aluko.
The Charlton Athletic forward, who had been causing concern in the Scottish defence for the whole match, ran through the rather static defence and shot high past Collie.
Scotland continued to come forward and Hollie Thomson tested substitute goalkeeper Danielle Hill with a shot from 20 yards.
When Aluko stabbed the ball home from close range to give England a two-goal lead, the match looked to be over, but that goal only set up what was a frantic finale.
Hughes's strike in the final minute gave them hope but Sanderson's goal three minutes into injury time quashed any hopes Scotland had of pulling off a remarkable comeback.
England now take on Russia on Friday, a step further to qualifying for next year’s FIFA U19 World Cup finals.
