England legend Marieanne Spacey selects Casey Stoney as her Player of 2012
England Women’s legend Marieanne Spacey has chosen Casey Stoney as her Player of the Year.
In 2012, the Three Lions captain led her side to this summer’s European Championship Finals and won her 100th cap, against France in March.
She featured in eight of her country’s nine games and scored England’s final goal of the Euro qualifiers, against Croatia in September.
Spacey has watched Stoney grow into the centre-back and the skipper she is today.
And the former striker, who scored 28 goals in 91 internationals, believes 2012 was the year Stoney “came of age”.
Spacey said: “I have known Casey for many years and have watched her develop from a frustrated young player into an outstanding international player and leader.
“She has shown that with a positive attitude, a commitment and a desire to better herself, she has become a role model to hundreds of girls wanting to and already playing the game.
“She not only wants to better herself, she has the drive and supportive personality to raise standards of those around her.
“2012 was, for me, the year that Casey really came of age.
“All the commitment, desire and hard work shone through with her consistently high performances as a player and her leadership of others on and off the pitch.
“If ever dreams come true, I believe they came true for Casey in 2012.”
But has Stoney done enough to secure your vote?
Voting will close at midnight on Sunday 13 January 2013.
