In March 2011, Kelly Smith became only the third player in history to earn 100 caps for the England Women’s team.
Gillian Coulthard and Rachel Yankey had previously reached triple figures for their country, but against Italy in the Cyprus Cup Smith joined their elite band. It was a fitting game to reach such a landmark, as it was against the Italians that Smith made her senior team debut back in 1995.
It was also fitting that Smith, who donned the captain’s armband for the day, marked the occasion with a goal, a converted penalty after 38 minutes.
Smith appeared twice more in the Cyprus Cup, against Canada and South Korea, and she then helped England to victories over USA and Sweden – two of the world’s top five teams.
The 32-year-old started every game in this summer’s World Cup, playing in the hole behind the lone striker, and she smashed home her penalty against France in the quarter-final shoot-out.
