UEFA overturn goalkeeper's red card against Switzerland.

The FA has been successful in its appeal against Rachel Brown’s red card which she received in last week’s World Cup play-off second leg against Switzerland.

The England Women’s goalkeeper was dismissed for violent conduct in the 41st minute when Swiss forward Ramona Bachmann attempted to claim the ball from the England goal, but UEFA have overturned this red card and Brown is now available to play in England’s next competitive match.

“I’m really pleased,” said Head Coach Hope Powell of this decision.

“I’m a little bit disappointed that the red card will stay on Rachel’s record but ultimately very happy that she is now able to play at the World Cup.

“I’ve spoken to her and she is delighted. She’s not too bothered that the card wasn’t expunged, she’s just very happy that she is able to play.”

The draw for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Finals will take place on Monday 29 November.

What Do You Think?

  • The red card likely remains on the record because it cannot be taken back once issued by the referee - she did, after all have to leave the match without a replacement. UEFA just withdrew the penalty for the card because review revealed that it was awarded in error.By tom (19 months ago)
  • what is the reason for the red card staying on her record when the decision has been thrown out? It is extremely unfair and illogical.By anonymous (19 months ago)
