National Women's Coach Hope Powell has kept the faith with the same squad of 23
National Women's Coach Hope Powell has kept the faith with the same squad of 23 for England's crucial World Cup Play-Off Final against France, to be played on Saturday 16th November.
England are trailing 1-0 in their two-legged play-off final and need a victory in France if they are to qualify for the 2003 World Cup Finals, which will be held in China.
The squad includes captain Karen Walker and Amanda Barr, the strike force who netted the goals to get England into the Play-Off Semi-Final clash against Iceland. There are six players representing the professionals of Fulham, while Arsenal, victorious from the opening stage of the UEFA Women's Cup, provide four players.
England will meet up on Monday 11th November at Burnham Beeches Hotel to prepare for the game, before travelling to Lyon. The game will be played in Saint Etienne, the scene of England men's World Cup '98 heartbreak when they lost to Argentina on penalties, with a 3.00pm kick-off (local time).
England lost the first leg of the Play-Off Final 1-0 at Selhurst Park on Thursday September 16th. Despite putting in a plucky performance, the girls failed to gain the draw they deserved and will now go all out in attack to keep alive their World Cup dreams.
Away goals count, a 2-1 victory would see England win through to the 16-nation Finals in China in September 2003. Should the match finish 1-0 to England after normal time in Saint Etienne, the game will go to 30 minutes of golden goal extra time and then onto penalties.
