England's Women will play Iceland in the play-off semi-finals to reach the 2003
England's Women will play Iceland in the play-off semi-finals to reach the 2003 FIFA World Cup...England, who finished second in Group Four, had been awaiting the final games of Group Three to find out who their opponents would be. Russia won the Group and with it automatic qualification to the September 2003 Finals to be played in China.
In the final game of the group yesterday, Iceland traveled to Sardinia to play Italy, with a two-point gap ahead of their opponents. Iceland managed to gain a 0-0 draw and finished in second place, three points ahead of the Italians.
England will play Iceland over two legs, with the dates scheduled for late August and early September. National Women's Coach Hope Powell will be hoping to change the dates of the first leg as they coincide with England's participation in the inaugural FIFA Under-19 World Championships, taking place in Canada.
Should England progress through the semi-final, they would meet either France or Denmark in a play-off final - again to be played over two legs in October and November 2002.
