Stuart Pearce has boosted the ranks of his Under-21 squad ahead of Monday night’s game with Iceland at Deepdale, calling in three new faces to the group.
Following a combination of injuries and the decision to rest key players who had featured in Thursday’s excellent 4-0 win in Denmark, numbers had been reduced in the set-up.
The squad was also further hindered by the withdrawal late yesterday of goalkeeper Frankie Fielding and Arsenal full-back Kieran Gibbs, both of who picked up injuries that ruled them out of Monday evening’s action.
With Iceland due to provide stern opposition at Preston’s Deepdale ground (7.45pm ko - click for tickets), Pearce moved quickly upon his return from the senior team’s win against Wales to bolster his options.
Midlands-based midfielders Adam Hammill of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Jordon Mutch from Birmingham City join the group before the penultimate preparation friendly for the UEFA Under-21 European Championship in Denmark this June.
Also coming in is Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Amos, who is currently on loan at Oldham Athletic.
Mutch has made one appearance for the U20s, as has Amos, whilst Hammill has previously appeared for the U19s.
The three debutants join two others in Nathan Baker and Jordan Spence, who are also set to take their bow at Under-21 level, both having caught the eye for England’s U19 team.
