England Under-21s striker signs on loan with Sheffield Wednesday

England Under-21s forward Connor Wickham has moved from Sunderland to Sheffield Wednesday on a month's loan.

Wickham has scored four goals in his last five appearances for Stuart Pearce's side, including a header in their 4-0 victory over Sweden on Tuesday night.

And with Euro 2013 on the horizon the former Ipswich Town youngster will welcome the opportunity to impress during his stay at Hillsborough.

"I need to play games and after speaking to the manager and with the size of the club, I jumped at the chance to come here," Wickham told the Sheffield Wednesday website.

"It’s always important to have the manager’s backing and hopefully I can come here and make an impact."

19-year-old Wickham has made nine appearances for the Black Cats this season and is looking to take his England form into his club football.

He said: “As a striker you want to score in every game. I want to come here and show everyone what I’m capable of.

“My confidence is high and hopefully I’ll add another dimension to the team.

“It was good for me to play 45 minutes for England Under-21s and to score a goal boosts your confidence. Hopefully I can take that into my time here and hit the ground running.”

England Under-21s next match is at Brighton's AMEX Stadium on Monday 25 March. Click here fore full details...
