England Under-21s will restart their
UEFA 2013 European Championship qualification campaign with a fixture against Norway at Chesterfield FC in September.
Stuart Pearce will take his table-topping Young Lions to the Proact Stadium on Monday 10 September 2012, kick-off 7.00pm (BST), knowing they could well have secured a coveted play-off place by the time they kick-off at the home of the Spireites.
The Under-21s face a double header in September – following a six month break from competitive action – as they trip to Azerbaijan before returning to these shores to face a Norway side they have already
defeated 2-1 in Drammen.
With two games to go for England in Group 8, Pearce’s team sit seven points clear of second placed Belgium, who have played the same number of games.
Stuart Pearce, England Under-21s Head Coach, said: “The next two games are absolutely crucial to our ambition of reaching Israel for the Finals in 2013.
“We have only lost one competitive game this qualifying tournament, away in Belgium, and I am keen for it not to happen again.”
Pearce returns to the role of Under-21s Head Coach, having missed the February
victory over Belgium in Middlesbrough whilst taking charge of the England senior team on a temporary basis. “It will be good to be back with the players and the staff for these qualifiers, although they are a few months away yet.
"It was great that we kept continuity under Brian Eastick for the Belgium game and I’m thankful to Brian for his contribution, not just in that game, but throughout the campaign.
“Nothing changes for us – our philosophy is to win. A win in Azerbaijan might be enough, but two wins will mean we are in the play-offs, which is the target we set ourselves at the start of this process.
“We’d love to see the people of Chesterfield fill out their stadium and help us achieve our ambitions. I am sure they will, as they deserve to see the Under-21s in action after supporting our younger development teams as well as they have.”
Last October Kenny Swain’s
U16s beat Northern Ireland 3-1 in the Victory Shield at Chesterfield, drawing a crowd of over 4,000, whilst nearly 10,000 turned out for the first international at the new stadium
against Germany’s U19s.
