England v Portugal
2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship Qualifier
7.45pm, Friday 5 September 2008
Wembley Stadium
England’s Under-21s will play their decisive final European Championship qualifier against Portugal at Wembley Stadium in September.
Stuart Pearce’s side have also confirmed they will kick off the new season with an international at the home of Premier League new boys Hull City in August. Tickets for both games will be priced from just £10 for adults and £5 concessions.
The KC Stadium in Hull will host the first international of the season against Slovenia on Tuesday 19 August, kick-off 7.45pm.
The match will precede the European Championship qualifier against Portugal at Wembley Stadium on Friday 5 September, kick-off 7.45pm. England currently top the group with six wins and a draw. This record looks set to ensure qualification for the Championship play-offs.
The highly-rated Portugal side need victory to stand any chance of overhauling England’s group lead and win a place alongside England in October’s play-offs.
England Under-21 Coach Stuart Pearce said: “Since our last Under-21 game, six of our players have been in the senior squad. That shows that the dividing line is very small and Fabio Capello is happy to bring players in and have a look at them.
“We want the transition to the seniors to be as smooth as possible. Taking this game to Wembley is part of that. A lot of the Under-21 players will never have played there before and the experience of playing this game there will help them as and when they step up to the seniors.”
Many of the six players recently involved with the seniors – Joe Hart, Theo Walcott, Gabby Agbonlahor, David Wheater, Tom Huddlestone and Joe Lewis - will be expected to play their part in ensuring England top their group by defeating Portugal.
August’s international in Hull will also provide local football fans with the opportunity to see the country’s best young players in action.
Pearce added: “I’m looking forward to playing at Hull. I had a trial with the club when I was 17 and took Manchester City there for pre-season games. The city will be a vibrant place at the moment following their promotion to the Premier League and I’d be very surprised if we didn’t get a big crowd to see the Under-21s.”
