England U17s Head Coach John Peacock saw his side grow gradually into their first win of the new campaign on Wednesday evening, as a late strike from Devante Cole sealed a single goal victory over Italy in Cambridge.

It was the first occasion in which Peacock has taken charge of this group of players and aside from the opening stages of the game, he was impressed with what he saw from his Young Lions.

"It was a shaky first 15 minutes and I just thought we needed to settle down a little bit and make better decisions," he told FATV after the game.

"Having got over that, I thought we were very good in the last 20 minutes of the first half.

"It was a really good football game though, with two very good teams out there."

It looked as though the game may peter out into a goal-less draw, but after spending most of the second half pressing for a goal, there was relief all-round when Manchester City hitman Cole broke the deadlock with just two minutes remaining.

"The Italians made life very difficult but I was delighted that we scored when we did to win the game," he added.

"I think we just about deserved the win tonight."

With two more games to go over the long weekend against both Czech Republic and Portugal, Peacock intends to see all of his 18-man squad in action so there will be a different line-up in place for Friday's match with the Czechs in Bishop's Stortford.

"I'll make changes again on Friday, as I want to see everyone play and give them a chance to show what they can do," he added.
