England U17s Head Coach John Peacock frustrated by Russia defeat
England U17s Head Coach John Peacock was understandably disappointed after seeing his side slip to a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of Russia at the Pirelli Stadium on Monday night.
After a win over Portugal in the first Elite Qualifying Round on Saturday, the Young Lions knew a result against the Russians would put them in pole position for a place in the Euro Finals.
But two stunning strikes from the Russians dented England's hopes to leave Peacock frustrated.
He said: “We pretty much dominated most of the possession in the first period but unfortunately we conceded just before half time so that gave them a bit of a lift.
“The second goal has killed us a little bit, that goal was always going to be crucial for whoever gets their nose in front second half and unfortunately it wasn’t us.”
Despite his disappointment at the result, Peacock took a lot of positives with the performance from his young players and how they reacted to his instructions.
He added: “I think there were a lot of positives and I was very pleased with how the lads played. We had a game plan to work the ball through to the attacking players and I thought we did that very well.”
Peacock remains positive that the Young Lions could pick themselves up in time for their next game against Slovenia on Thursday.
England know they need to win that game and hope Portugal can beat Russia to give them a chance of qualifying for the European Championship finals.
He said: “We know that we’ve got to get three points at least to give us any fighting chance.
"I’m confident we’ll get the win without any doubt, we have to play as we have been playing the last couple of games."
