England U17s took a large step towards Liechtenstein on Monday night, with a convincing victory against Malta in Burton putting them as favourites to progress to May’s European Championships in the Principality.

Goals from Chuks Aneke, Harry Kane, William Keane and Benik Afobe were enough to see John Peacock’s team to their second straight victory and a place at the top of their Elite Round group.

They now know that if they can avoid defeat against Slovakia in their final game on Thursday evening, then that will be enough to take the Young Lions into the last eight of the competition.

"We're very happy, if you'd have said to me before the start of the game that we'd win 5-0, I'd have been very happy with that,” Peacock told TheFA.com after the game.

"Most importantly though, we've got six points and a nice goal difference which may help in the long run.

“We'll just have to wait and see but we are in the right position at this moment in time.”
